Chapter 31

It was the end of the day, and the summit was coming to a close. Steve and the Prime Minister were outside the estate, saying their goodbyes as his guest prepared to leave. The Prime Minister was addressing his staff when Steve saw some commotion among the guards on the compound's external wall. The men stationed on the east wall moved into a defensive formation, each taking a knee and bracing their rifles against their shoulders. They were looking outward, citing on some outside threat. It was clear the guards were preparing for a confrontation.

A member of Steve's security team came up to the two world leaders, "Sirs, I am sorry to interrupt, but we have a fleet of unidentified drones approaching the estate. I'm going to have to ask you to come back inside until the threat is neutralized."

Before Steve could say anything, a bush next to the estate’s front entrance parted in half. A large gun emerged from the ground and swiveled around, pointing off in the distance. The gun had two barrels, each about one meter long. One looked like a giant laser pointer, while the other was connected to a belt holding ammunition. As Steve was staring at the gun, he heard aircraft overhead. He looked up to see two helio-planes pass over, flying towards the threat. He was amazed at the coordinated response from the different elements of their security forces. All of this had happened in less than a minute.

Before Steve could move, there was an explosion, and he was knocked off his feet. One of the Prime Minister's helio-planes ignited, sending a ball of fire high into the air. The force of the explosion pushed back trees and cleared the area around the landing pad. A few of the church windows shattered, and the old estate next to the landing pad was partially engulfed in flame.

Steve was on the ground but didn't feel hurt. He moved his arms and legs without pain. The explosion was far enough away that the leaders weren't in danger, but Steve could feel the heat from the flames as he regained his senses. He raised himself onto his elbow and rolled over to check on the Prime Minister. Before he could locate anyone, two members of his security team picked him up by his armpits and started carrying him away. His feet were dragging on the ground as they ran inside the estate, with two other guards following close behind, shielding him with their bodies, their rifles at the ready. The men ran at a full sprint, faster than Steve thought possible, carrying the extra dead weight that was his body. They entered the estate and ran to the centrally located elevator bank. An elevator was waiting. They rushed in, the doors closed, and the lift dropped quickly, Steve feeling the unusually rapid descent in his stomach. A few seconds later, the elevator reopened, and the guards physically carried Steve into an expansive underground bunker.

The two guards carrying Steve set him down, and each took a step away, giving him room.
